A situation where we place the flashlight very close to the spot can introduce some confusion into this experiment. Yes, we can explain it - the large light source of the flashlight consists of several small light sources, and if you bring them closer to the spot, the light rays emanating from the places of these small lamps will appear on the paper. It is reasonable to keep the flashlight about away from the slot.

In any case, this experiment leaves us wanting without an explanation. How? An analogy with the previous experiments will help us: if we imagine that we fill the areas between the three LED lamps with any number of LED lamps so that the entire area emits light, and then we draw the light rays emanating from this area and passing through the slit, then we get the same picture as in our experiment .

A real light source as the sum of point light sources

We treat a light source of any shape and size as a sum of point light sources. The light produced by a light source is the sum of the lights of the point light sources that make it up. When depicting such light sources in the figure, we mark only the rays that are important for the performance of one or another specific task or purpose.
